Behind the Collection: Making of Au Naturel Epilogue - a pearl story

Posted on

We arrive at the second chapter of our collection, the Epilogue:
Inspired by the ethereal and iridescent pearl, a precious gemstone built through time and care and layers of mineral deposits. The process is what inspires us, these layers that form something so beautiful over time.

The story of a pearl is never linear, a lot like the story of life of humankind. A seemingly hard, outer shell, continuously processing its environment, while nourishing itself to produce something magical and beautiful through the uncertain seas. These mollusks, which include oysters, clams and mussels, belong to a group known as bivalves, are capable of 'weathering a storm' and producing a happy ending, a pearl.

These beautiful creatures are no match for climate change though. Ocean acidification (from carbon pollution absorbed by the ocean) make it harder for these animals to grow their hard outer shells. Although their filtration systems are valuable, they also pose a threat, making them sensitive to environmental pollutants, holding on to toxins they would otherwise nourish.

Each unique pearl piece is carefully assembled by hand, a process that takes time and care. The pieces are meant to enhance your existing beauty, Au Naturel, but a little bit more.
